Faces on a String

This room with dark walls has the feel of a modernist art gallery, of an experiment in simple gestures.

It reminds me equally of the childish gesture of stringing beads and of an 19th century photographer drying prints in his darkroom.

Whichever it is, the effect is compelling.

All White

White was pretty much absent outside our windows, and is still timid. So I gathered some all white inspiration to keep me January-rooted and free of dreams of tangerine orchards and age-old olive trees near marble beaches.

Moskow’s New Territory

The new territory lies at the outskirts of Moskow. It stretches in front of our eyes through Fedor Shklyaruk‘s photography.

Haus-Zwischen-Steinen---Werner-Stuhler-1963

Haus Zwischen Steinen, Werner Stuhler (1963)

Who left, who lingers on?

Tinge of Surrealism

I find surprising the degree to which the symbolism of the avant-garde photography of 1920s up to the 1950s is still relevant today.

Herbert-Bayer---Lonely-Metropolitan

Herbert Bayer – Lonely Metropolitan (1932)

In this image, the artist’s eyes stare from the palms of his hands, cut off at the wrists and floating mysteriously in the courtyard of a Berlin apartment block.

LO-LEE-TA

In point of fact, there might have been no Lolita at all had I not loved, one summer, a certain initial girl-child.

From-Vinland-Sally-Mann

Sally Mann‘s ‘At Twelve’ series affords us a glimpse of thin-armed “pale pubescent girls with matted eyelashes” that exude that “elusive, shifty, soul-shattering, insidious charm” of Nabokov’s Lolita.

Old Masters

Romina Ressia’s photographic portraits offer a slightly twisted take on the paintings of the old masters of the 14th to 17th centuries. In her approach the conventional composition and setting is disrupted by the insertion of staged contemporary elements.
